Platform Adds Alternative Verification Methods and Privacy Safeguards
As part of the updated plan, Discord will introduce new methods for confirming a user’s age. One of the alternatives will allow verification through a credit card rather than an identity document or facial scan. This option could allow users to access age-restricted features without submitting sensitive personal identification.
The company also promised to increase transparency about the third-party services it uses for verification technology. Discord said it will provide more information about the vendors involved and their data handling practices. Another key change relates to facial recognition tools used to estimate age. Discord stated that it will only work with partners whose systems perform age estimation entirely on a user’s device.
The company specifically noted that Persona, a widely used provider of facial age estimation technology, does not meet this standard. As a result, Discord has chosen not to partner with the company for its verification systems.
Discord is also developing additional features designed to reduce the need for universal verification across servers. One upcoming tool will allow communities to create dedicated spoiler channels for age-restricted content. This option means only users accessing those channels may need verification rather than requiring it for every member of a server.
The platform plans to publish a detailed technical explanation of its automated age determination systems as well. Providing this information could help users better understand how the technology functions and what data it processes.
