lucadelladora – Sony has officially unveiled the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, introducing the company’s first major flagship smartphone redesign in several years.
Since the launch of the Xperia 1 II in 2020, Sony largely maintained the same design language across its premium Xperia lineup. With the Xperia 1 VIII, however, the company is finally moving away from its long-running vertical camera layout in favor of a raised camera island positioned at the top-left corner of the rear panel.
The redesign appears largely driven by significant upgrades to the telephoto camera system, which Sony claims is four times more powerful than the previous generation.
New Telephoto Camera Becomes Main Highlight
The Xperia 1 VIII introduces a much larger 1/1.56-inch telephoto sensor with an f/2.8 aperture and a 70mm focal length.
According to Sony, the larger sensor should dramatically improve low-light photography and overall image quality compared to earlier Xperia telephoto cameras.
Alongside the upgraded telephoto lens, the phone also includes:
- 48MP main camera with f/1.9 aperture
- 48MP ultra-wide camera with 104-degree field of view
- 12MP front-facing selfie camera
Sony is additionally introducing new AI-assisted photography tools designed to help users improve compositions and camera settings automatically.
The features analyze scenes and provide recommendations involving:
- Color tone adjustments
- Lens effects
- Bokeh settings
Sony says these suggestions are based on its “Creative Look” imaging philosophy developed through the company’s long history in professional camera technology.
The approach appears somewhat similar to AI-guided photography features seen on devices such as the Google Pixel 10 Pro.
Familiar Xperia Features Remain
Despite the redesign, Sony has retained several signature Xperia features that continue to differentiate the phone from most flagship rivals.
The Xperia 1 VIII still includes:
- Dedicated camera shutter button
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- Front-facing stereo speakers
- microSD card support
Expandable storage remains especially rare among premium flagship smartphones.
Sony says the device supports microSD cards up to 2TB, meaning the higher-end model with 1TB internal storage could theoretically reach a combined total of 3TB storage capacity.
The phone is built with frosted glass protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and aluminum side rails.
Color options include:
- Graphite Black
- Iolite Silver
- Garnet Red
- Native Gold
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Powers the Device
The Xperia 1 VIII uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset paired with either:
- 12GB RAM + 256GB storage
- 16GB RAM + 1TB storage
The phone features a 6.5-inch OLED display with:
- 1080 x 2340 resolution
- 120Hz refresh rate
Battery capacity remains at 5,000mAh and supports both 30W wired charging and wireless charging.
Sony claims the device can last up to two days on a single charge, although real-world performance will likely vary depending on usage patterns.
Software Support Trails Competitors
The Xperia 1 VIII ships with Android 16 and will receive:
- Four Android OS upgrades
- Six years of security updates
While respectable, Sony still trails competitors such as Samsung, which now offers seven years of both operating system and security support on flagship devices.
Software longevity has become increasingly important in the premium smartphone market, especially at higher price points.
Expensive Flagship Focused on Europe and Asia
Sony continues avoiding the US smartphone market for its flagship Xperia devices.
The Xperia 1 VIII will primarily target Asia and Europe, following the strategy Sony has used for several recent Xperia generations.
Pricing in the UK starts at:
- £1,399 for 12GB RAM + 256GB storage
- £1,849 for 16GB RAM + 1TB storage
If the phone were sold officially in the United States, estimates suggest pricing could approach $1,900 to $2,500 depending on the configuration.
With a redesigned camera system, AI-powered photography features, expandable storage, and classic Xperia hardware elements, the Xperia 1 VIII appears aimed at photography enthusiasts and power users who prioritize unique features over mainstream flagship trends.
